Session Submission Type: Panel Session
This panel paper session will examine hallowed grounds in various places in the Diaspora, including the United States of America, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and Mexico. One paper will examine hallowed grounds in Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and Mexico. It will argues that Africans and their descendants created sacred spaces in those countries. It will also argue that elites in those countries have instituted policies to directly remove the African presence by Whitening or Europeanizing the populations. A second paper will examine hallowed grounds in the United States of America in relation to the poetry of Margaret Walker and Sarah Webster Fabio. It focuses on the places where Walker and Fabio lived, worked, and played, including 47th Street in Chicago, Lenox Avenue in New York, and Rampart Street in New Orleans. A third paper will examine hallowed grounds in the United States of America in relation to the Black Panther Party. It will focus on important sites of the Black Panther Party in Oakland, California, including Merritt College where the organization was born; the site of the first office of the organization; the site of the last office of the organization; the 28th death site of Bobby Hutton; and the 9th Street death site of Huey P. Newton.
