Session Submission Type: Panel Session
This panel will explore the development of Islam in the African American experience. Panelist will explore topics such as the evolution of the masjid in American cities to the oldest and largest segment of American Muslim communities—Muslim African America. It will examine the role that the masjid, as a sacred and public space, and as a relatively new urban-American institution. The African American Islamic community have established museums, preservation projects, published works and lectures to establish a historical perspective that reconciles the good as well as the despoiled ideals of the Islamic, African, and African American historical traditions.
