The End of the Mississippi Experiment with Conjugal Visitation

Abstract

On February 1, 2014, an end came to what University of Mississippi Professor of Sociology Dr. Columbus B. Hopper termed the Mississippi experiment with conjugal visitation when Mississippi Commissioner of Corrections announced that the practice would be discontinued. With this announcement, a century old chapter in Mississippi corrections came to an end. This paper exams the evolution of conjugal visitation in Mississippi and the factors that led to its adoption and discontinuation.
