Dehumanization is a powerful psychological force that can contribute to acts of violence. Research has examined the social distance dehumanization creates and how this process contributes to acts of genocide and other war crimes. Plainly, if one group conceptualizes another group as less than human, they are more likely to use violent force in their interaction with the dehumanized out-group. This project examines the process of dehumanization in the context of gang behavior and the utilization of violence between groups.
