Jobs Held After Being Celled: The Relationship Between Employment and Incarcertaion

Abstract

This paper explores the impact of multiple incarcerations versus first incarcerations on individuals’ negative employment outcomes. Using longitudinal data from the Rochester Youth Development Study (RYDS), I find that incarcerated individuals demonstrate multiple forms of employment disadvantage even prior to incarceration but not because of it. More specifically, I find that employment stability (the number of jobs individuals hold over a period of time) and employment tenure (the average employment length of each individual) differ between individuals who experience incarceration and those who are never-incarcerated.
