The purpose of this study is to study the relationship between income, poverty and nonfatal criminal victimization. It will use data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey to look at the effect of annual household income and poverty level on crime. It will discuss both property and nonfatal violent crime. Comparisons will be made using the victimization experiences of persons and households living in various poverty and annual household income levels. Crime characteristics (weapon use, victim injuries, and police reporting) and trends in violent and property victimization will also be discussed.
