A Study of the Impact of Community Policing on Fear of Crime

Fri, Nov 21, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Marriott, Salon 1, Lower B2 Level

Abstract

From the early 1960 through mid-1980s, the Gallup Poll found 3 in 10 and 4 in 10 for both women and residents of larger cities were afraid to go out alone at night in their own neighborhoods. Since the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorder (1968) identified fear of crime as a highly prominent issue in America, a great deal of studies have been conducted to identify both facilitators and inhibitors of fear. With a consideration of community policing as an inhibitor of fear, the current study surveyed over 1,100 college students at two 4-year universities to examine the impact of community policing on fear of crime.
