Building on the Gender-Responsive Strategies research sponsored by the National Institute of Corrections (Bloom, Owen, and Covington, 2003), the Gender-Responsive Policy and Practice Assessment (GRPPA) is a process designed to guide assessment of research-based, gender-responsive policies and practices in jails, prisons, and community corrections. The GRPPA provides a framework that encourages facilities and programs to examine their alignment with gender-responsive principles. The authors suggest that this assessment process can influence the ways in which criminal justice agencies manage, supervise, treat and provide programming for women by creating environments and programs that reflect an understanding of the realities of their lives.
