Financial Aspects of the Tobacco Smuggling Business in the UK

Abstract

Understanding the financial management in organised criminal activities is important towards investigating and preventing organised crime. Although there is some general information about the level of financing needed for some illicit markets (e.g. drugs), this is not the case with other organised crime activities that present entrepreneurial characteristics. The aim of this presentation, which is based on in-depth interviews with experts, law enforcement agents and active tobacco smugglers at various levels of the trade, is to provide an account of the financing aspects of the tobacco smuggling business in the United Kingdom.
