This study examines how alienation is implicated in what is known as classical criminological theory or its modern version: rational choice theory. It is part of a larger effort to produce an integrated theory of crime causation based on the concept of alienation. The focus on classical criminological theory or rational choice theory is important because the U.S. criminal justice system is based in large part on this theoretical framework, which emphasizes social contract, deterrence, and rational choice.
