Does Distance from Home Affect Inmate Misconduct?

Abstract

Mass incarceration has led to an increased interest in understanding prison experiences and their effects on inmate behavior. In this study, we examine how the distance an inmate is placed from their home community may affect misconduct. We first draw on prior theory and research to anticipate why prison distance may affect inmates. We then empirically examine whether distal prison placements increase misconduct, as well as what factors may mediate the two. We also explore the possibility that prison distance may have a greater effect for certain groups of inmates. The findings suggest that distance may affect inmate behavior.
