University Role Models: Experiential Learning about Delinquency, Risk Factors, and Youth Empowerment

Thu, Nov 20, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Marriott, Pacific F, 4th Floor

Abstract

Criminal justice practioners consist of a unique group of professionals entrusted with a tremendous amount of discretion over the lives of countless individuals. In preparing future criminal justice professionals such as probation officers, victim advocates, social service providers, and others, university professors have a unique opportunity to prepare students by integrating hands-on experiences with scholarly in-class materials. This presentation discusses how the University Role Models Program was created in efforts to instill an understanding and commitment toward caring for the community while also contextualizing and enhancing learning about the ethical, practical, humane, and theoretical aspects of working with families, youth, and communities in achieving equity, justice, and safety for all. Quantitative and qualitative data will be provided on the program’s first year and demonstrate the impact on university students, youth, families, schools, and communities.
