A cross-national investigation of recent developments in policing domestic violence is the focus of the current study. ‘Risk’ is a concept that now underpins many policy responses to domestic violence in the US and UK. Similarities and differences in the use of risk identification, assessment and management practices for incidents of domestic violence are discussed, drawing upon a variety of data sources in each country (e.g., national and local policy documents, operational risk tools, data from police and multi-agency partnerships, interviews with practitioners). An empirical examination of these practices furthers our understanding of the nature of this type of violence, the utility of applying risk-oriented conceptualizations to victims’ experiences, and the effectiveness and challenges associated with risk-based approaches.
