Insiders live criminal justice so when I was planning my first Inside Out class, I decided to focus on Globalization, a topic that has many of the same controversies: justice, discrimination, unequal treatment of people based on race/ethnicity, power differences, unfair treatment of women and children, lack of access to health care and education, unfair working conditions, and the list goes on. My goal is that the students, both Inside and Outside will recognize that the problems caused by globalization are the same problems we face on a daily basis but on a much broader scale.
Globalization refers to the global linkages and organization of social life on a global scale. A goal of a class on globalization is to develop a global sociological imagination so that students will recognize their links to the global world. Teaching this class includes discussion of sociology, ethics, economics, and politics. I believe we meet the goals of Inside-Out, exploring social, economic, and political factors which are barriers to human rights and ethical treatment of people, through discussion of globalization.
