The topic of transgendered persons usually evokes uncomfortable grins and politically incorrect jokes, but it is hardly a laughing matter for prison administrators. From a societal standpoint, the transgendered have largely been ostracized and ignored. This ostracization is amplified in prison settings, posing significant issues for prison administrators and staff. Few Departments of Corrections have established clear guidelines in the booking, housing, safety, and continued care of these inmates. Avoidance is no longer a viable option for officials as the transgendered community gains considerable press coverage and greater societal support. This paper explores the current state of the imprisoned transgendered population and focuses on the issues that prison administrators face when housing such inmates. Possible solutions are explored for the identification, housing, and protection of transgendered inmates.
