In this study the effectiveness of integrated surveillance camera control systems will be analyzed by measuring the effect of crime prevention and criminal investigation.
New York City and Microsoft invented Domain Awareness Systems in 2012. They said the Domain Awareness System (DAS) is the integrated surveillance camera control system based on high technology. The system is connected to 3,000 or more video cameras around New York City, and provides tracking surveillance targets and gaining detailed information about them. However, the effectiveness of integrated surveillance camera control systems has not been proved yet with respect to crime prevention and criminal investigation.
There have been some solid studies on closed-circuit TV surveillance such as a meta-analysis of Brandon Welsh and David Farrington(2009). However, they didn’t study on integrated surveillance camera system but on individual effectiveness of surveillance camera.
Instead of New York city, I conducted survey in South Korea. In South Korea, more than 50,000 open-street surveillance camera was installed all over the country now. Furthermore, 27 cities have integrated surveillance camera control system which is similar to DAS. In this study, I’m going to analyze about the effectiveness of the systems and provide better ways to improve effectiveness of the systems.
