Housing Foreclosures, Neighborhood Change, and Youth Crime

Abstract

This research focuses on the non-financial consequences of the recent foreclosure crisis by examining the relationship between changes in the social structural characteristics of the 100 most populated cities in the United States and the rate of youth homicide in these cities. Structural equation models using United States Census Data , housing foreclosure data and the Supplementary Homicide Report indicate a connection between differences in social structure post foreclosure crisis and changes in youth homicide rates. Policy implications for recovery from economic crisis are discussed.
