Collective Efficacy and Urban Change: Examining Social Control Forces in Areas of Gentrification

Wed, Nov 19, 9:30 to 10:50am, Marriott, Sierra B, 5th Floor

Abstract

The current project examines gentrification and crime in Chicago neighborhoods from 1980 - 2010. Using a combination of data sources, the paper examines whether or not measures of collective efficacy in neighborhoods can predict whether or not a neighborhood undergoing gentrification experiences a demonstrable change in levels of crime. Additionally, the paper examines the possibility of a group threat effect. Results will be presented, along with suggested policy implications.
