The extent of the immigrant population in the United States criminal justice system, as well as the considerations of the way immigrant-status designation may be related to criminal justice decisions. Using a sample of inmates from a correctional system in a large southern state, the current study examines the impact of immigrant status, including official designation by correctional authorities, on sentence length, controlling for a variety of legal and extralegal factors. Results, as well as direction for future research and policy are discussed
