This study uses an admission cohort of federal inmates (N=2271) to assess whether there are gendered pathways to prison. Latent class analysis was used to identify the pathways to prison and relied upon indicators highlighted in the gender-responsive and gender-neutral literature. Similar to previous research, the current analysis identified both unique and overlapping pathways to prison for men and women. Implications from the research suggest that while gender is an important factor to be taken into account, not all correctional programming needs to be gender specific. The paper concludes with a discussion of study limitations and recommendations for future research.
