The United States horse racing and horse showing industries together contribute an annual economic impact of over $50 billion to US GDP; they incorporate an estimated 3.5 million horses, some of which are valued in excess of hundreds of millions of dollars per animal. Crime prevention and security present a challenge for horse owners and handlers who participate in these industries, at home and on the road, as they regularly travel to public venues where they will live and compete for days, weeks or months. This paper examines ways the race horse and show horse industries routinely utilize environmental crime prevention strategies to safeguard valuable equines and their equipment on private farms and public race and show grounds.
