Although there has been much debate on the best way to operationalize Gottfredson and Hirschi’s theory, numerous studies have shown construct validity through the use of attitudinal and behavioral measures. Additionally, Hirschi’s (2004) suggested revisions to the theory, though seldom-used, have also been shown to have construct validity. It is unclear, however, if the competing measurement techniques are invariant across race. This study uses data from the NLSY to test for the racial invariance of low self-control theory using attitudinal, behavioral, and bonding measures.
