The Efficiency of Different Analytical Tools and Units of Analyses for Identifying Hot Spots

Abstract

Hot spot policing is a widely used by police departments to prevent crime i where the crime concentration is high. The literature suggests that analysts use different tools and different units of analyses to identify hot spots. Though systematic reviews report the overall success of hot-spot policing, there are few studies that explore different hot spot identification methods with different units of analysis. This study compares various hot spot analysis tools with different units of analysis -- census blocks, street segments, grid cells, and point locations. This study concludes with a discussion of the practical value of different hot spot analytical tools with different unit of analysis.
