Offender Based Approaches and Social Network Analysis

Abstract

Homicides, robberies, rapes and felonious assaults are the violent crimes against person. Their violent nature generally draws attention both from public and from the police. By using place based approaches, usually hot spot policing, police departments try to reduce violent crime in a given area. Recent studies, however, suggest that place based interventions moderately reduce violent crimes. On the other hand, offender focused strategies, such as pulling lever or focused deterrence approach, offer best practices to police departments to reduce violent crime as well. The implementation of pulling lever strategy, however, is limited because this approach usually works for criminals who are under probation or under parole. The current study discusses offender based approaches and offer new insights to improve the effectiveness of offender based approaches without harming personal liberties of people.
