Jock Young taught me how to discover those layered realities in society's borders particularly under the influence of globalization and late modern precariousness. His work on social exclusion brilliantly demonstrated the power of the dialectic in the contradictory processes of imperial expansion and the criminology of war. Focusing on the issue of Iraqi refugees in the U.S. I reflect on Jock's borderland criminology and its broader relevance for displaced peoples.
