Cops and Cameras: Organizational Characteristics and Controversial Policy Implementation

Thu, Nov 20, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Marriott, Salon 5, Lower B2 Level

Abstract

The present study presents particular aspects of a larger study examining the implementation of officer-worn video cameras. The study will discuss the background and environment of the larger study and use of body-worn cameras by patrol officers in a large police department. The study uses a quasi-experimental design, with officers assigned to either treatment or comparison groups. Findings will focus on the results of officer surveys concerning a wide range of topics about the implementation and utility of the camera systems, their agency and its organizational culture. Discussion will include implications for law enforcement agencies’ introduction of controversial policies and the organizational characteristics that may bridge to success or pose barriers for implementation and adoption by line-level personnel.
