Toward a Typology of Nonsexual Assault on College Campuses

Wed, Nov 19, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Marriott, Sierra A, 5th Floor

Abstract

While there have been numerous studies of crime on college campuses, most have been concerned with sexual assault or drug and alcohol use. While these crimes are certainly important and more than deserving of inquiry, we assert that simple and aggravated assault is equally important. According to Office of Postsecondary Education Campus Safety and Security data, there were more 2,700 aggravated assaults reported on colleges between 2007 and 2009. This study will explore the nature of assault on college campuses by performing a content analysis of campus police reports. Specifically, situational, offender, and victim characteristics will be identified in an effort to develop a typology of assault on college campuses.
