The Interplay of Self-Esteem, Self-Labeling, and Gender-Role Identity: An Explanation of Youth Delinquency

Abstract

The group-based trajectory modeling approach is increasingly being applied in the field of criminology to identify and analyze trajectories of criminal activity. Using data from the Korean Youth Panel Survey (KYPS), we use trajectory analyses to examine gender differences in trajectories of delinquent behaviors among Korean adolescents. This study will examine the role of self-esteem, self-labeling, and gender-role identity as distinctive predictors of trajectory group membership. Thus, the current research will add to the prior criminological literature on the association between these theoretically important factors and delinquency by using an advanced statistical approach to determine the effect of these factors over time on different membership groups, as well as by comparing the similarities and differences in delinquent trajectories of boys and girls.
