In Their Virtual Shoes: Simulation for Domestic Violence

Thu, Nov 20, 6:00 to 8:00pm, Marriott, Golden Gate, B2 Level

Abstract

In Their Virtual Shoes is a scenario-based online immersive learning experience that illustrates the dynamics of domestic violence. Students select from 12 character scenarios (based on actual domestic violence cases) and move, do, think, and experience the lives of victims of domestic violence through the simulations. The characters represent a variety of ages, races, ethnicities, abilities, and education levels. This allows students to understand some of the specific challenges to various groups. In Their Virtual Shoes was adapted from Washington Coalition Against Domestic Violence’s In Her Shoes education tool. Results from student questionnaires will be presented in terms of the learning outcomes. Learning outcomes include gaining an understanding of domestic violence, types of abuse and the cycle of abuse, why victims stay in abusive relationships, the role of social services in assisting victims of domestic violence, and society’s response to domestic violence. The simulation is free for educational purposes under Creative Commons Licensing as and was funded by a Colorado Immersive and Game-Based Learning Grant.
