Since the first Goldstein (1985) article, there have been several studies that have examined the various theoretical violent types of drug markets. Scholars have argued for and against the importance of the presence of violence in the determination of drug market locations. The current study proposes the utilization of a statistically-based measure of violent drug markets. Statistical categorization provides that a quadratic relationship exists between the drug arrest rate and violent crime. The measure is tested against other violent drug measures. Such a measure holds significant policy ramifications for High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas.
