Hate crime has been the subject of research for the last twenty-five years. Generally speaking the familiar categories of racial, anti-Semitic, and homophobic biases have been the centermost foci of hate crime research. Less is written about disablism in the United States. Moreover, the occurrence of elderly abuse is a less familiar focus of hate crime studies. This exploratory research considers the association between disablism, elderly abuse, and the presence or absence of supportive mental health and related services in the communities of states which report disablism and elderly abuse data.
