Correctional education is correlated with successful transition into society including reduced rates of recidivism and increased rates of employment upon release to the community. However, adolescents in correctional facilities typically have significant needs academic needs compared to their peers without juvenile justice involvement. Educators in juvenile correctional facilities must be provided with resources necessary to deliver high-quality educational and related services in order to engage students in instruction and learning that facilitates their future success. Juvenile correctional education programs must strive to promote long-term success of their students through three approaches to improvement: (a) using scientifically-validated instructional practices; (b) providing personnel with professional development supporting such practice, and (c) implementing systems of accountability to determine whether a given practice is effective with the population being served.
