Abstract:
Different forms of media affect society in a multitude of ways on a daily basis. Research indicates that scenarios and products that are depicted through music media have a direct impact on the attitudes and behaviors of listeners; particularly depictions of criminal activity. Studies also suggest that music may affect different types of listeners, such as African Americans and females, in different ways. Secondary analysis was conducted to determine if music preference, specifically a preference for specific genres of music, influences listeners’ attitudes and behaviors regarding illegal substance use. Specific genres of music portray different criminal activities, with some suggesting violent messages, while others convey several references to illegal substances. The research suggests that individuals who prefer certain genres of music are more likely to be desensitized to illegal substance use and/or engage in illegal activity regarding substance use. The purpose of this study is to determine if individuals who prefer certain types of music are more likely to hold positive attitudes about and/or use illegal substances.
