Bronwyn will report on a pedagogical experiment where she had CUNY students first collect 'official' crime statistics about a part of the city they were familiar with, and then construct alternate maps of their experiences of those areas using annotated photographs as data points. This opened up conversations about what crime statistics fail to capture, and how we might think through our experiences of safety and danger in certain places with recourse to history and social structure.
