The current study examines sociodemographic, situational and contextual characteristics for child homicide that occurs near military bases and their surrounding areas. First, this study evaluates macro-level characteristics of the areas surrounding military bases. Areas with similar characteristics will then be included as controls. Second, we look at micro-level characteristics of the child homicide within both groups, military bases and nonmilitary bases. We will also compare different branches of the military and the relationship with child homicide and other community factors. Data were obtained from multiple locations including National Incident-Based Reporting System, the Census, the Center for Disease Control, and other governmental websites used to locate the military bases. This study aims to increase our understanding of child homicide in these areas and may help guide policy makers, law enforcement personnel, and any other individuals who are concerned with areas where there are varying degrees of risk for child homicide. Specifically, we hope to have an impact on policies concerning child services and other community based programs.
