Although males compose the largest group of sexual offenders incarcerated in federal prisons, the population of women convicted of sexual offenses has been increasing over the past decade. This presentation attempts to broaden our understanding of these offenders by examining the population of female inmates convicted of a sexual offense who were incarcerated in federal prisons in late 2011 (n = 126). Demographic and criminal history variables are explored along with variety of mental health and substance abuse markers. The population offenders was divided into two groups: those involved in the commission of a contact sex offense (n = 59), and those who provided access, but did not actively sexually abuse anyone (n = 67). These two groups were compared using the aforementioned factors. Implications for treatment and management of these inmates along with suggestions for future research are discussed.
