Several studies have noted differences between inmates with and without mental health issues. Using data from the “Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities, 2004,” which uses a nationally representative sample, we investigate differences among inmates who have various types of mental health disorders. These differences include differences in prison infractions, hospitalizations, stays in segregated units, participation in programming, and other variables. Finally, we examine predictors of various outcomes (such as stays in segregated units, participation in programming, etc.), to examine whether mental health issues are significant predictors of outcomes (when controlling for things like age, race, and prior offense).
