From The Courtroom To The Classroom: The Value Of Service Learning To Encourage A Voice Of Care In Criminal Justice Students

Thu, Nov 20, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Marriott, Sierra D, 5th Floor

Abstract

This paper discusses the role of service learning in exposing sociology/criminal justice students to the life challenges which exist in society today through their internship experience in order to encourage them to develop a sense of individual social responsibility and a desire to serve and help the communities in which they live. Through the use of journaling, reflective thinking and collaborative exercises, students undergo a transformative experience and acquire an awareness of their responsibility to give back to society and serve the diverse communities which exist. The goal of the course and its learning methodologies is to instill within students a voice of concern and a life-long commitment to serve society so as to contribute to solving society’s ills. Results of class surveys confirm that service at internship sites instills within students a knowledge of their duty to serve and a commitment to serve their communities.
