Stigmatisation, Parenting, Drugs and Social Work

Wed, Nov 19, 9:30 to 10:50am, Marriott, Pacific G, 4th Floor

Abstract

This presentation focuses on Anti-Oppressive Practice, a social work approach, and considers how it might be better operationalized in social work practice with parents who use drugs. It is argues that this might best be achieved in conjunction with a deeper understanding of criminological/sociological theory which would enable social workers to think more broadly about the structural aspects of oppression. It is argued that this would enable social workers to contextualise and broaden the experiences of service users beyond person-centred approaches.
