According to the United States Department of Justice, drug trafficking organizations (DTOs) are highly sophisticated hierarchical organizations that engage in the production, transportation, and/or distribution of large quantities of one or more illicit drugs. Literature on DTOs also indicates an association with various terrorist groups as well as groups that traffic humans. While research continues to explore these associations, there are limited studies that examine the specific links between Mexican DTOs, terrorist groups, and human trafficking. This research examines these links as well as various theories used to explain the actions/behavior of those involved in DTOs. Extrapolating from tenets of various theories, crime-control strategies will also be discussed.
