Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
Over the past year, we've seen a remarkable shift across various parts of the world in terms of cannabis policy and practice. In the US, states like Colorado and Washington have legalized cannabis for recreational purposes, while Canada is unveiling its projected ‘billion dollar’ medical cannabis industry. Along with these major changes, public opinion has shifted dramatically toward support for the legalization, or decriminalization, of cannabis. These shifts suggest that the consensus that formed the foundation for many of today’s stringent cannabis laws is declining. This panel will cover the changing legislative landscape across Canada and parts of the US, the shifting attitudes about cannabis use and its policy implications, as well as new and innovative research on the "substitution" effect of cannabis for medical purposes.
