Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
USP Marion was the first modern attempt to build and manage a supermax facility, and serves as a model for construction of similar federal and state facilities. Since the 1980's, Marion has been employed as a disciplinary lock down facility for federal prisoners received from USP Leavenworth (KS), USP Atlanta (GA), USP Lewisburg (PA), USP Lompoc (CA), and United States Medical Center Federal Penitentiary (USMCFP) Springfield (MO). The permanent lock down began in 1983. The FBOP used Marion to isolate Level 6 maximum-security male prisoners who were escape risks, political problems, a threat to the order of other institutions, or had assaulted or murdered prisoners or correctional staff.
