Although the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) provides a unique source of information about crime in the United States, these data are largely underutilized by criminologists. This session highlights innovative ways of using the NCVS to study and measure violence. The papers illustrate a range of issues that can be explored with the NCVS. These topics include examining patterns of violence against particular victim groups as well as the effect of changing societal definitions of violence on statistical indicators.
