All of the papers on this panel use consistent sets of data to address a number of questions regarding the relationship between police and the public. Questions concerning the public’s views of the police are addressed by surveys of persons coming into recent contact with the police in several dozen communities. These include the role of race and procedural justice in the assessments of these encounters Questions concerning the views of the police are examined using surveys of many thousands of police officers serving in 101 agencies across the country. These include the acceptance of female officers within the organization, and the impact of community factors on officer’s views of the communities they serve. Both data sets were compiled by the National Police Research Platform.
