Mental health problems in forensic settings

Abstract

Rates of mental health problems are very high among youths and adults in forensic settings, such as prisons, forensic outpatient centers and juvenile justice facilities. Increasing knowledge on mental health problems in these settings is important because this may improve treatment of symptoms which in turn might decrease institutional aggression and recidivism. In this session we will present data from a project in which Dutch prisons collaborate with psychiatric centers in order to improve the mental health conditions of prisoners. Next, we will discuss gender differences in mental health problems and treatment information in forensic outpatient centers and relate this to results from secure care facilities. Finally, we will discuss differences between childhood-onset and adolescent-onset justice-involved boys in trauma and mental health problems.
