Looking at the realities of prisoner reentry from a critical perspective, members of the Critical Social Psychology working group on The Criminal Punishment System and Community-Based Research at the Graduate Center, CUNY discuss recent research that re-frames re-entry. Recognizing that re-entry entails much more that returning people home from prison, we look at ways to build community that includes people returning from detention facilities and prisons as a way to disrupt the school to prison pipeline and cycles of reincarceration. We take examples from our research in juvenile re-entry, higher education as re-entry, and the use of a re-settlement framework for understanding and facilitating successful re-entry that overcomes oppression and enhances communities.
