Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session
Bureau of Justice Assistance Smart Policing Initiative (SPI) sites continue to produce positive research findings regarding the effectiveness of innovative evidence-based policing strategies, using credible and rigorous research designs and predictive analysis. However, the successes of these sites are rarely realized without addressing and overcoming challenges and obstacles when implementing Smart Policing. For this roundtable, law enforcement practitioners and researchers will discuss four major challenges currently faced by SPI sites – leadership and staff turnover, collaboration and outside stakeholder involvement, sustainability and organizational change, and use of research and analysis. Roundtable presenters will discuss the impacts of these challenges to Smart Policing and various strategies and approaches SPI sites have used to overcome these challenges.
