Academic Partners: The Unique Role in Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Grants

Abstract

One unique aspect of Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation (BCJI) grants, which are funded through the BJA as part of the Obama Administration's Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative, is that they call for academics to engage in both the planning and program facilitation as "research partners." This role is decidedly different than the academic "evaluator" many of us may be used to, and brings with it a variety of complexities, which may be both encouraging and challenging. This roundtable invites faculty working on these grants to discuss their experience with this somewhat new role, and what this might mean for government/academic partnerships moving forward.
