Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session
While CCJ's profession-focused articles have gone about assessing scholar and departmental research productivity, faculty collaboration and impact factors, surprisingly little attention has been paid to a topic of supreme concern to the ABD: how to land the faculty position you cherish.
At this panel, faculty with extensive experience on both sides of the search table will provide lessons learned on how to create an application packet which gets noticed, what to say (and not say) during phone interviews, how best to prepare and present yourself at the on-campus interview, and how best to reply to questions regarding the nexus of scholarship, teaching, and service. The discussion will also consider whether interview preparations should differ between R1 and non-R1 institutions (or whether excellence always looks the same, no matter the Carnegie category).
Subtopics may include whether the "ironic" outfit you love is the best thing to wear during your meeting with the Dean, or whether that second (or third) glass of wine is a good idea at the faculty dinner. In sum, the participants will not only discuss best practices, but also discuss the unspoken rules of the game which get talked about but rarely published.
