Session Submission Type: Presidential Plenary

Abstract

This year’s President’s Justice Award recipient is Lateefah Simon, a renowned advocate for civil rights, prisoner re-entry, and youth and adult legal justice, with too many awards and accomplishments to list (e.g., McAurthur Fellow and Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights). Ms. Simon is featured in the award-winning documentary “Girls in Trouble,” along with Stephanie, Shangra, and Sheila, covering 4 years of Simon’s advocacy and the girls’ personal and legal entanglements and successes. Lexi Leban and Lidia Szajko made this powerful documentary and following a showing of the film, Simon, Leban, and young women featured in the film will be on a panel to discuss what’s happened since the film was made and answer questions. “Girls in Trouble” is an excellent teaching tool for us, legal system professionals, our students, and our communities.
